The Chadderton 1861 Memorial Day Parade
Sunday 6 April 2008

The above event was a joint operation between the Oldham liaison of ex service assoc & life for a life memorial forests, the day had two aims
1, to re-enact and celebrate the presentation of the queens and regimental colour to the 31st Lancashire rifle volunteers, by the ladies of Oldham on the same date and time 147 years
Earlier 1861,
2, the life for a life team, to plant 2 trees one to commemorate the re-enactment-and the second tree, in recognition of the centrifugation made locally by ex patriot polish ex combatants,/serviceman, which fitted rather well with the fusiliers on parade [Monte casino}
The parade was led, by 8 mounted police in ceremonials dress, with fully groomed horses
Followed by the corps of drums & fifes of the fusilier assoc Lancashire, a contingent of regular & TA soldiers, the standards and ex service men and women of Oldham, a greater Manchester, police marching contingent, in best dress, the historical society in period dress
Closely linked with the fusilier queen Andréa Wray {whose brother was killed in Northern Ireland-
James duncan-3rrf} the band and choir of Henshaws school, this school also paraded back in 1861
Followed by detachments, of Hulme Grammer school CCF and Greater Manchester ACF, with the Oldham Scottish Pipe band bringing up the rear , the parade marched past with Norman k Stoller OBE a Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, with the worship the mayor of Oldham councilor Anne Wingate JP, taking the salute ,also in attendance was the military attaché
To the polish embassy London Col Krzysztof Szymanski, the total dignitaries present was 60
2x which were Capt. John O Grady and Jo Farquer, and Col Sir John Timmins KCVO,OBE, TD, LLD with his lady, once the march past was complete the parade formed hollow square, with the service, ceremony, and tree plantings , act of Remembrance, once over ,military static displays , and dancing came to the fore, with our own Corp of Drums providing an excellent victory beating, the original Colours having been restored, at a cost of 17k are on display
